Oslandia is continuing to improve QGIS to offer the draftsman the same experience as with the computer-aided design (CAD) software on the market. Today we introduce you to the “trim/extend” tool. As its name suggests, this tool, well known to CAD draftsmen, allows you to trim / shorten or extend segments.

The Trim/Extend tool allows you to also modify (multi)lines AND (multi)polygons. Moreover, it is not necessarily the end of the lines that is concerned any segment of a geometry can be modified.
To trim a line, you could simply use the ‘split features’ tool. To extend, you have two choices: create a new line and merge both or use the node tool to drag the endpoint to your desired location.

With activating the Node Tool on a feature , QGIS opens the Vertex Editor panel listing all the vertices of the feature with their x, y (z, m if applicable) coordinates and r (for the radius, in case of circular geometry). Simply select a row in the table does select the corresponding vertex in.
Perhaps you can do it with some of the CAD plugins of QGIS. For sure you can do it with Kosmo GIS http://opengis.es/ Select to linestrings which should be extended and use the Expand lines until crossing tool from the CAD toolbox. CAD Tools extension must be activated first from the Extension manager.
